JSON Diff

Compare two JSON documents and see every added, removed and changed value by path.

A plain name skips that key at any depth. Use $.path or /pointer for one place, and [*] for any array item.

Runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

What is JSON Diff?

A JSON diff tool compares two JSON documents and tells you exactly what is different between them: which values were added, which were removed and which changed, each with its path. It is the quickest way to see what an API now returns compared with yesterday, what a configuration change really did, or why two payloads that look the same behave differently.

A plain text diff is a poor fit for JSON, because it flags harmless differences such as key order, spacing and number spelling. This JSON diff compares the data itself. The objects {"a":1,"b":2} and { "b": 2.0, "a": 1 } are equal here, large integers are compared exactly instead of being rounded, and a number written as 1.0 equals 1. Every difference is listed with a path such as $.user.address[2].city, the old value and the new value, and a side-by-side view colors only the real changes.

You can compare arrays by position or ignore their order, skip noisy fields such as updatedAt or request IDs, list unchanged values too, tidy either side with the Format and Sort keys buttons, and export the result as a standard JSON Patch (RFC 6902) that other tools can apply. Invalid JSON is reported with the side and the exact line and column. Everything runs in your browser, so the data you compare is never uploaded.

How to use

  1. Paste the original JSON on the left and the changed JSON on the right. The comparison updates as you type.
  2. Read the summary and the Changes table: each row shows the path, what happened and the old and new value.
  3. Switch to Side by side to see both documents with the differences colored.
  4. Tick Ignore array order if the order of list items does not matter, and type keys or paths to ignore noisy fields.
  5. Copy the changes as text, or copy or download them as a JSON Patch.

Example

Input

Original: {"name":"Ada","age":36}
Changed: {"age":37,"name":"Ada","city":"London"}

Output

changed  $.age   36 -> 37
added    $.city  "London"

Frequently asked questions

Does key order matter?
No. JSON objects have no order, so {"a":1,"b":2} and {"b":2,"a":1} are equal. Array order does matter by default, because the items of an array are ordered; tick Ignore array order if it does not matter for your data.
How are numbers compared?
By value and exactly. 1, 1.0 and 1e0 are the same number, and very large integers beyond JavaScript's safe range are compared digit by digit instead of being rounded.
What is a JSON Patch?
A JSON Patch is a standard list of add, remove and replace operations (RFC 6902) that turns one JSON document into another. You can copy or download it from the Changes tab when arrays are compared by position.
How do I ignore fields like timestamps?
Type the key name, for example updatedAt, to skip it at any depth, or a path such as $.user.token or $.items[*].id to skip one place. Separate several entries with commas.
