What is Tip Calculator?

A tip calculator works out how much to leave on a bill and what each person owes when you split it. Enter the bill, choose a tip percentage, and it gives you the tip, the total and the share per person. It saves doing percentages in your head at the end of a meal, and it keeps a group from arguing over who owes what.

This tip calculator has quick buttons for 10, 15, 18, 20 and 25 percent and a box for any other percentage, so you can match local custom or reward great service. Set the number of people to split the bill evenly, and see the tip per person and the bill per person as well as the total each person pays. Amounts are plain numbers with two decimals, so it works in any currency.

If you like to pay a round amount, choose rounding: round the whole total up to a whole number, or round each person’s share up so everyone pays a whole amount. The tool then tells you what percentage tip you actually ended up leaving. All the arithmetic is done in whole cents, so results never show odd fractions of a cent, and nothing you type leaves your browser.

How to use

  1. Type the bill amount.
  2. Pick a tip percentage with a button, or type your own in the custom box.
  3. Enter how many people are splitting the bill.
  4. Choose a rounding option if you want a round total or round shares.
  5. Read the tip, the total and what each person pays.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?
It depends on the country and the service. In the United States 15 to 20 percent is usual in restaurants, while in many other places a small tip or none at all is normal. The buttons are only shortcuts, so enter whatever percentage fits.
Should the tip be calculated before or after tax?
Many people tip on the pre-tax amount, others on the total. This calculator works on the amount you type as the bill, so enter the figure you want the tip based on.
Why do the shares not always add up exactly?
When a bill does not divide evenly, a share is rounded to the nearest cent, so the shares can differ from the total by a cent. Use the round each share up option to make everyone pay an equal whole amount.
Does it work with any currency?
Yes. Amounts are plain numbers with two decimals and no symbol, so they are right for dollars, euros, pounds, rupees or anything else that uses two decimals.
